Renderings is the latest album from jazz composer Chuck Owen and his big band. The title of the album is an allusion to the fact that each of the tunes was written by various members of the WDR Big Band (a state-sponsored big band in Germany). Chuck wrote an arrangement (his “rendering) of each piece. To me, renderings invoke a loose, relaxed feeling, which featured heavily in my decision of which direction to take this cover. In addition many of the tunes had a nature theme, which I knew I wanted to feature. I chose a mountain landscape, which I knew would work well as I wanted something that wrapped from the front to the back of the cover. I chose a torn paper collage using painted watercolor to represent the loose, ethereal feel I wanted to achieve. (2024)
